Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of Mexico’s most meaningful and visually striking traditions. Celebrated primarily on November 1st and 2nd, it is a time when families honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Rather than being a somber occasion, Día de los Muertos is a vibrant and joyful celebration that reflects a unique cultural perspective on death—one that embraces it as a natural part of life.
The origins of Día de los Muertos trace back thousands of years to pre-Hispanic civilizations such as the Aztecs, Maya, and Purépecha. These cultures held rituals to honor the dead, believing that the souls of the departed continued to exist in another realm. When Spanish colonizers arrived in the 16th century, Catholic traditions blended with indigenous beliefs, aligning the celebration with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. The result is the modern Día de los Muertos, a rich fusion of ancient and colonial influences.
In 2008, UNESCO recognized Día de los Muertos as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its significance not only in Mexico but around the world. Today, the celebration has gained international attention, inspiring festivals and adaptations in other countries while remaining deeply rooted in Mexican identity.
We offer 3 different Día de Muertos tours that we will rotate each year, offering you a chance to experience this wonderful festival in different locations.
