Each day was an adventure, but the experiences that were a highlight were the Mayan Poktapok game, the Panama hat workshop, the sisal factory and the pyramids. Oaxaca: A Trip To Remember - This is the second extended tour that my wife and I have taken with Flip Flop Tours. I can say without hesitation the quality of our tour did not diminish... read more from the first. Dan has the ability in a few short days to give you insights into the culture and atmosphere of a region. I had no idea the Zapotec culture of Oaxaca was so different from the north of Mexico. The ruins of Monte Alban and Mitla were impressive. The guide pointed out the cultural achievements of the Zapotec people. The visit to the weavers and potters outlined the craftmanship of the people brought into the twenty first century. The cooking class brought it all together for me. The walk through the market to gather the ingredients, then the preparation demonstrated the the culture of the people of this region of Mexico. Thank you Dan for your thoughtfulness and expertise putting together a great tour!

7th March 2026Wonderful small group tour in southern Mexico - My husband and I are just back from a great experience on the 7 nights/ 8 days “Tren Maya Tour” with eight other adventurers and our fearless leader, Dan Patman... read more of Flip Flop Nomad Tours. Dan took very good care of us, ever cheerful, witty, knowledgeable, resourceful and all round great guy. He also selected wonderful local guides at each of our stops. We were thrilled to visit the spectacular archaeological site of Palenque, Chiapas in the early morning mist, when very few other visitors were there. Our local guide held us rapt with his explanations and stories about the Mayan world. The hotel Dan selected for our two nights couldn’t have been better, on the edge of the jungle with a beautiful infinity pool and a fabulous restaurant.
We were very excited to experience the relatively new Mayan Train which took us in first class from Palenque to the city of Campeche. A very clean and comfortable train that carved through the jungle past various towns and cities, crossing rivers and state lines for 4.5 hours until we reached Campeche. Campeche after dark was delightful with restaurants and bars spilling out into the streets free from traffic.
Some highlights along the way included a very interesting demonstration by a local family of how “Panama” or “Jipijapa” hats are handmade, using fibres from the jipijapa palm, a very laborious process involving many hours in humid underground caverns; the archeological site of Uxmal, again in the morning, before there were crowds; a delicious demonstration of how chocolate is grown and prepared (yes there were samples!); four nights in Merida; a boat ride from Celestún to see the flamingos feeding in the estuary and a fantastic trip by the same boat into the amazing magical world of mangroves. We enjoyed delicious local cuisine in unexpected out of the way places and a glorious swim in a cenote. These are just some of the highlights of our wonderful tour. I highly recommend Flip Flop Nomad Tours if you are looking for a carefree way to visit some amazing places. This is just one of several tours offered by this company.Eatinghealthy10

16th February 2026Great Copper Canyon Tour - I went with Dan to the Copper Canyon area for seven days in early March. The trip was very well organized, with a great local guide. After flying... read more from Manzanillo to Los Mochis, we took the very scenic train both in and out of the canyons in what was certainly my nicest train trip ever (great open-air bar car!). It featured amazing views and perhaps would be even better in the summer (more waterfalls in the canyons), when I would like to do this trip again. Other than the train travel (about 4-5 hours each way), we had three full days in the canyon area, including a day with an opportunity to do ziplines around one of the canyons. Intense, but fun! Both food and accommodations (two nights on the edge of a canyon) were truly first class. I can't recommend this trip highly enough. I had a fantastic time.

Breakfast, which was included, offered many tasty choices. The optional evening at the folkloric ballet exceeded my expectations as the finale was emotionally overwhelming. All Aboard the Brand New Mayan Train: Ruins, Flamingos, Chocolate, and Every Vehicle Imaginable! - We’ve just wrapped up 8 unforgettable days of adventure, history, and a whole lot of modes of transport in Mexico. We rode the new Tren Maya Train like pros, donned hand-woven jipijapa palm hats with flair, and soaked up the mystery of Uxmal in the Puuc region. We learned that chocolate isn’t just delicious—it’s practically sacred (and we respectfully devoured it). Flamingos showed off their style in Sisal’s lagoons, cenotes gave us magical swims, and Merida dazzled with its haciendas and rich culture.
We traveled by plane, bus, van, train, moto-taxi, horse cart, and boats that looked suspiciously like bathtubs! Add in some truly amazing traditional cuisine, and let’s just say we’re full—in every sense of the word. Would do it all again. Thanks to Dan & Flip Flop Tours for an amazing tour, educational & Cultural tour.Michelle B
