Journey with us to Oaxaca, located in Southwest Mexico and home to the Zapotec people. Oaxaca, along with its famous archaeological site of Monte Alban, has been a named a UNESCO world heritage site since 1987. The state is renowned for it artisans who produce black pottery, alebrijes and of course the amazing Zapotec rugs, hand woven in Teotitlán del Valle using traditional techniques and dyes. As well as the skilled artisans, the state is well known for its production or mezcal, archeological sites such as Mitla and Monte Alban. And a visit to Oaxaca would not be complete without sampling and experiencing the cuisine – tlayudas, memelas, crickets, insects and of course mole!
Our 6 day tour will give you an introduction to this wonderful area of Mexico full of tradition and history and one of the earliest settled civilizations in the country led by a local expert to maximise your enjoyment of the time spent.

A 6 day tour to Oaxaca, famous for its textiles and cuisine
Trip Overview
Day 1: Melaque to Oaxaca City
Outward travel from Melaque to Oaxaca City, via Mexico City. Upon arrival we will have an orientation talk and optional group dinner/ free time.

Day 2: Oaxaca City centre & cooking class
After breakfast in the hotel we will take a locally run cooking class and tour near the centre to learn how to prepare some traditional dishes of Oaxaca . After lunch we will embark on a walking tour to explore some of the highlights of the historic city centre.

Day 3: Monte Alban & mezcal
After breakfast we take a morning visit to one of the oldest cities in Mesoamerica to learn more about the Zapotec culture. Following our tour of Monte Alban we have lunch and then visit one of the region’s distilleries of the famous drink of mezcal to learn about its production and to taste some of this smokey spirit.

Day 4: Black pottery & alebrijes
Following breakfast we will depart for the town of San Bartolo Coyotepec where we will visit and learn about how this traditional, intricate pottery is made in a family run workshop. Following this we head to San Martin Tilcajete, famous for its carved, wooden, mystical animals, and also made even more popular thanks to Disney’s film Coco.

Day 5: Rugs, ruins and a huge tree
We visit the artisan town of Teotitlán del Valle to visit and learn about the famous Zapotec rug weavers who still use traditional methods and natural dyes to make their masterpieces. Next we travel to the amazing Tlacolula valley to explore the amazing archaeological site of Mitla with its interlocking carvings and murals. On our way back to Oaxaca City we visit the worlds largest diameter tree – the Arbol del Tule for a quick stop.

Day 6: Return travel – times to be confirmed upon booking
Travel and return transport with transfers to Melaque or other pre-arranged destination.
